Tripura: Bangladeshi National, Four Indian Touts Detained; Case Registered

Agartala, January 21, 2026: Security agencies on Tuesday night detained one Bangladeshi national and four Indian touts from the Batadola area under Sonamura police station, Sepahijala district, on charges related to illegal immigration activities.

According to police sources, the detainees include one Bangladeshi male and four Indian males, who were allegedly involved in facilitating illegal cross-border movement. Acting on specific inputs, a team conducted an operation in the Batadola area and took the five individuals into custody.

In connection with the incident, a case has been registered at Sonamura Police Station under the relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, along with sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Police officials stated that all legal formalities are being duly observed as part of the investigation.

The arrested persons have been identified as: Tapan Kumar Ghosh (56), resident of MC Garden Road, Purba Sinthee, South Dumdum, PO Ghugudanga, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal; Saikat Chowdhury (55), resident of Kestopur, Rajarhat Gopalpur, PO Prafulla Kanan, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal; Ajit Kumar Das (35), resident of 146, Taki Road, near Deganga Girls’ High School, Chattapally, PO Deganga, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal; Robin Mia (22), resident of Ward No. 01, Uttar Nawdeepchandra Nagar, PS Sonamura, Sepahijala district, Tripura; and Dhananjay Dhar (59), resident of village Harbang, Upazila Chakuria, Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh.

Police sources said that the Bangladeshi national was allegedly being assisted by the Indian touts. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the larger network, if any, involved in the incident.

All five accused are scheduled to be produced before the learned court on Wednesday after completion of the necessary legal procedures, officials added.
