Agartala, May 30, 2026: The Higher Education Department has launched the online admission process for undergraduate courses in 29 Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) across Tripura, including the newly established Nalchar Government Women’s Degree College, for the academic session 2026-27. The admission process, which commenced on May 29, will continue through the SAMARTH portal till June 7 midnight.

Addressing the media personnel here at Secretariat on Friday afternoon, Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma said the department has introduced several initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher education and aligning institutions with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

“Like previous years, the entire admission process will be conducted online through the SAMARTH portal to ensure transparency, merit-based selection and ease of access for students. Offline applications will not be accepted,” Debbarma said.

He informed that the first merit list will be published on June 19, followed by admissions on June 22 and 23. Subsequent rounds of admission will be conducted based on vacancy positions, with the final round scheduled between July 4 and July 6.

Highlighting new developments, Debbarma said Nalchar Government Women’s Degree College in Sepahijala district will begin its academic journey this year, providing greater opportunities for girls seeking higher education in the region.

“In line with NEP 2020, we are continuously expanding academic opportunities. A new B.Sc. (Computer Science) programme with an intake capacity of 30 seats is being introduced at IASE, Kunjaban. We have also increased the intake capacity of BA English (Major) at the institute from 25 to 50 seats,” he stated.

According to the department, the total intake capacity in Government Degree Colleges has increased from 31,954 seats in 2025-26 to 32,159 seats in 2026-27, an addition of 205 seats following the establishment of the new college and introduction of new courses.

Debbarma further said that around 28,967 students are expected to have passed the Higher Secondary examination from various boards in the state this year, and the available seats in GDCs are sufficient to accommodate eligible aspirants.

He also noted that the government has issued gazette notifications for the upgradation of Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) into Tripura Government Technical University and Women’s College into Tripura Government Women’s University, with necessary steps underway to operationalise both institutions as universities.
