Agartala, April 02, 2026: In a major anti-narcotics operation, a joint team of the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) apprehended a 22-year-old youth at Agartala Railway Station with contraband worth nearly Rs 50,000 on Wednesday evening.
The arrest was made around 7 PM during an intensified routine security drive aimed at preventing the transportation of illegal substances through express trains.
The accused has been identified as Bhagaru Kumar, a resident of Barhampur, Sayesthapur, under Raghupur Police Station in Bihar. Security personnel intercepted him near the station’s parking area between the RPF post and the pay-and-use facility after noticing suspicious movement.
During a search of his backpack, officials recovered 48 bottles of Eskuf, a banned codeine-based cough syrup often misused as an intoxicant.
Officer-in-Charge of Agartala GRP said the seized contraband is estimated to have a black market value of around Rs 50,000. During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed that he had brought the consignment from Patna with plans to distribute it locally in Tripura.
A case numbered 2026GRP021 has been registered under Sections 21(C) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985. Police said the accused remains in custody while further investigation is underway to trace local receivers and identify the wider trafficking network involved.
