Agartala, March 19, 2026: Putting an end to all speculations, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Central Election Committee has nominated senior party leader Jawhar Chakraborty as its candidate for the upcoming Dharmanagar byelection.
Chakraborty, a long-time party member, is the husband of party leader Barnali Goswami, who previously served as chairperson. His nomination is seen as a strategic move by the party ahead of the crucial contest.
Taking to social media, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday congratulated Chakraborty on being chosen as the BJP nominee for the Dharmanagar byelection, which is scheduled to be held on April 9.
Highlighting Chakraborty’s credentials, BJP vice president Rebati Tripura said he has been associated with the party for many years and is among a handful of senior leaders with deep organizational experience. “He is a state committee member and an honest leader,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) has already announced senior leader Amitabh Datta as its candidate for the seat. The Indian National Congress, however, is yet to declare its nominee for the byelection.
The Dharmanagar byelection is expected to witness a keen contest among major political parties in the state.
