Agartala, November 19, 2025: Tensions flared in Khumulwng, the headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC), as political violence erupted ahead of the yet-to-be-announced ADC elections. TIPRA Motha supporters allegedly set fire to the BJP party office on late Tuesday night, reducing it to ashes, following a violent clash that left three Motha workers critically injured.

Local sources informed that the confrontation began near a park in Khumulwng when three TIPRA Motha supporters were walking along the road and engaged in a heated argument with BJP workers. Outnumbered, the Motha supporters were attacked with bricks, sustaining severe head injuries. Locals rushed them to Khumulwng’s Khrengbari Hospital for treatment.

In retaliation, TIPRA Motha supporters launched a mass attack on the BJP office. The newly decorated premises, adorned with portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, were set ablaze. Photographs of state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and even Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur were destroyed in the fire. BJP leaders and workers fled the scene as the mob advanced.

Police from Radha Kishore Nagar station arrived but failed to prevent the destruction. This marks the second attack on the BJP office in Khumulwng within two months, with both incidents blamed on TIPRA Motha supporters.

The violence has sparked widespread unrest in the region. Despite being coalition partners in the state government, BJP workers allege they are repeatedly targeted by TIPRA Motha cadres. Former Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik had earlier voiced similar concerns, claiming BJP workers alone were facing assaults during political clashes.

Meanwhile, senior TIPRA Motha leaders, including MLA Biswajit Kaloi, MDC Ganesh Debbarma, and youth leader Suraj Debbarma, visited the hospital late at night to meet the injured party workers.

The incident highlights the growing rift between the coalition partners, who publicly maintain cordial relations in Agartala but remain locked in violent confrontations in the hills.
