Agartala, May 29, 2025: The Tripura government has issued a high alert across the state, directing all District Magistrates and emergency departments to prepare for the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall expected between May 28 and 31. In an official advisory undersigned by Deputy Secretary C.K. Malsom, authorities have been asked to begin evacuating residents from low-lying areas to safe shelters and be ready to launch relief operations if required.

The alert follows a Special Weather Bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated incidents of extremely heavy downpours accompanied by squally and gusty winds over Tripura during this period. The IMD has attributed the anticipated extreme weather to a low-pressure area forming over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast.

In response, the state government has mandated all District Magistrates to closely monitor the situation and stay in constant coordination with the NDRF, SDRF, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Fire and Emergency Services, and trained volunteer teams. These teams must remain on standby and be mobilized immediately if the situation escalates.

“Ensure all flood rescue equipment including boats and life jackets are ready. Keep a close watch on river flows, embankments, and catchment areas. Evacuate vulnerable populations and begin relief distribution where necessary,” the order stated.

The directive also emphasizes the importance of rapid damage assessment, with districts required to submit reports to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) by 2:00 PM daily, outlining the situation and steps taken.

Furthermore, all line departments and response teams have been instructed to clear debris swiftly and restore essential services without delay. Officers and key personnel are to be deployed for critical responses, while trained volunteers are to be kept on standby for any emergency interventions.

Officials have been urged to remain vigilant and act in accordance with the disaster management plan, while continuously monitoring updates from the IMD.
