Agartala, April 11, 2026: Tension gripped Takarjala in Sepahijala district on Friday after a violent confrontation between workers of the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party reportedly led to an attack on the residence of BJP candidate Nirmal Debbarma.

The incident unfolded on the last day of campaigning for the April 12 elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), where Debbarma is in the fray as a BJP nominee.

Police sources said the situation initially deteriorated during a Tipra Motha Party campaign procession, when an altercation broke out between supporters of the two parties. The exchange soon escalated into a physical clash, leaving a few people injured before police intervened and dispersed the groups.

Later in the day, tensions resurfaced as a large number of Tipra Motha Party workers allegedly assembled near Debbarma’s residence and attempted to attack the premises. The gathering reportedly turned aggressive, prompting immediate deployment of additional security forces.

During the operation to bring the situation under control, Sepahijala Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma was seriously injured after being struck by projectiles from slingshots. Police resorted to lathi charge and fired around 20 to 25 rounds of blank shots to disperse the crowd.
