Agartala, October 31, 2025: Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Thursday highlighted the need to transform the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at R.K. Nagar into one of India’s premier veterinary institutions, urging students, faculty and officials to “work with dedication and vision.”

Addressing the 17th Foundation Day of the institute, Dr. Saha said Tripura has made notable strides in livestock production, emerging second in milk output in the North-Eastern region. “Tripura today stands in a very good position in producing milk, eggs and meat. The per-capita availability of eggs here is the highest in the North-East, and the state has already achieved self-sufficiency in meat production,” he stated, adding that the next goal is “complete self-sufficiency in milk and egg production.”

Highlighting the importance of veterinary science in rural development, the Chief Minister remarked, “The development of human life in rural areas is directly linked to livestock. That is why a strong veterinary infrastructure is essential.” He emphasized that the college’s facilities are comparable to medical institutions and noted efforts taken to address faculty shortages. “Earlier there were only one or two seats for Tripura. Today, nearly 66 seats are available — a significant achievement for the state.”

He also underlined the need for modern learning. “This is the era of AI and 5G. Students and faculties must update themselves to keep pace with the times,” he said.

Dr. Saha informed that a Green Animal Food Development Project covering 286 hectares has been initiated, along with duck and poultry farming under the CM’s Animal Resources Scheme. He also announced that SHIJA Super Specialty Hospital will soon be established in the area, with the groundbreaking likely on November 5.

Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das, senior officials, and dignitaries were present at the ceremony.
