Agartala, January 8, 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) convened a review meeting at the state party headquarters on Thursday to finalize preparations for the upcoming “MGNREGA Bachao Sangram” (Save MGNREGA struggle), a nationwide campaign announced by the party.
The meeting, chaired by TPCC president Ashish Kumar Saha alongside senior leaders, focused on mobilizing support across districts and blocks to ensure maximum participation in the 45-day program scheduled from January 10 to February 25, 2026.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Saha said the campaign is aimed at resisting the “systematic weakening” of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He asserted that the newly introduced Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB-G RAM G) Act undermines the rights-based nature of MGNREGA by centralizing control and reducing the role of local panchayats.
Congress leaders highlighted that MGNREGA has long served as a lifeline for rural households in Tripura, offering guaranteed employment and protection against poverty, hunger, and migration. They warned that the new law could strip citizens of their right to work and weaken local self-governance, leaving vulnerable families exposed.
Reaffirming the party’s stance, Saha said, “The Congress stands firmly with rural workers and will resist any attempt to dismantle MGNREGA.” He added that the state unit will coordinate closely with grassroots committees to strengthen participation in the nationwide protest.
The TPCC also accused the BJP-led government of spreading misinformation and neglecting the plight of the rural poor. Leaders stressed that the “Save MGNREGA” campaign is not merely a protest but a fight to safeguard a fundamental right enshrined in law.
