Tripura Couple Perishes in Mud House Collapse Due to Heavy Rain, Two Daughters Injured

Agartala, July 03, 2024: A husband and wife lost their lives when their mud house collapsed due to heavy rain. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday night, also left their two daughters injured. The deceased have been identified as Jhuma Tanti (26) and Pranesh Tanti (35).

Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha has expressed deep grief over the incident and announced financial assistance for the affected family. “Pranesh and Jhuma Tanti of Mekhlipara village panchayat in Khayerpur assembly constituency under West Tripura district lost their lives in an unfortunate incident due to excessive rainfall. Their two daughters aged three months and 12 years are under treatment. I am deeply saddened by this incident. The state government and administration have already taken necessary steps. Apart from the financial help, our government will support this family completely,” the Chief Minister stated on social media.

It is reported that the Tanti family had gone to sleep after their usual evening routine. Around 1 am, a loud noise awakened the family members. In a desperate attempt to escape, it was discovered that four members of the family were buried under the debris of their mud house. Reports allege that the fire department was contacted, but no one answered the calls. Local residents immediately initiated a rescue operation, managing to pull out Pranesh Tanti, his wife Jhuma, and their two daughters – a three-month-old baby and a 12-year-old girl.

The family was initially taken to Ranirbazar Hospital and subsequently referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for better treatment. Tragically, Jhuma Tanti was declared dead upon arrival, and Pranesh Tanti succumbed to his injuries after an hour and a half of treatment. The couple’s three-month-old baby sustained severe injuries, and both children are currently receiving medical care at the hospital.

The local MLA Ratan Chakraborty rushed to GBP Hospital on Wednesday morning to check on the injured children and expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss. “This is a devastating incident. My heart goes out to the surviving children and the bereaved family,” he said.

The arrival of the deceased couple’s bodies at their home was marked by an outpouring of grief from the community. West Tripura district’s District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar visited Mekhlipara to offer his condolences and assess the situation. “Two lives were tragically lost when their house collapsed at night. The Tripura administration stands ready to support the family in this difficult time. Both children are undergoing treatment at GB Hospital,” Kumar assured.
