Agartala, August 2, 2024: CPIM State Secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury along with State Secretary Mandal members Naresh Jamatia and Sudhan Das and MLAs Sudip Sarkar, Nayan Sarkar and Ramu Das visited the affected areas of Tripura’s Gandacherra sub-division in Dhalai district to address the situation directly with the victims and their families.
The CPIM delegation first visited the home of Parameshwar Reang at Jagabandhu Para, Gandacherra, who was murdered on July 07 last. The leaders consoled his grieving family and listened to their accounts of the incident. Following this, they toured various locations in Gandacherra that had experienced violence and destruction in the days after the initial event, speaking with numerous affected individuals.
At a press conference held at the CPIM State Headquarters here in Agartala city on Friday, Jitendra Chaudhury highlighted the dire conditions faced by those in refugee camps. “Families have been forced to flee their homes with nothing. Their houses have been burned down, and they are now living under polythene sheets provided by the administration. The conditions are deplorable, with children and the elderly falling ill,” he said.
Chaudhury demanded immediate and comprehensive support for these displaced families. “They need adequate security to return to their homes safely. The administration must provide sufficient food and basic necessities, including clean drinking water. It is unacceptable that they haven’t even received a single stipend.”
The CPIM has called for a thorough investigation into the incidents and proper compensation for the victims. “We need to ensure that the damages are accurately assessed, and the affected families receive the necessary compensation to rebuild their lives,” Chowdhury stated. He also urged for low-interest loans to help these families restart their businesses and farming activities.
Chaudhury condemned the series of violent events that began on July 7, describing them as unprecedented in their severity. “The arson and looting that have taken place are unlike anything we’ve seen before. Houses were broken into, looted, and then set on fire. Even domestic animals were not spared. Around 15 to 20 vehicles were destroyed, and shops were vandalized and torched.”
