Agartala, August 04, 2025: Highlighting the lack of security at GB Pant Hospital here, a senior doctor was physically assaulted by the family of a patient during the wee hours of Sunday.

The incident took place around 3 am when Bimal Sarkar, a resident of Narayanpur under the Airport police station was brought to the emergency department in a critical condition. According to hospital sources, Sarkar had reportedly consumed a poisonous substance mixed with alcohol.

“Doctor Liton Das responded immediately and began treatment, but within moments, two individuals later identified as Bapan Sarkar and Tapan Sarkar claiming to be the patient’s sons suddenly turned violent. They threw Dr. Das to the ground and beat him up brutally,” said a doctor from the emergency unit.

When another doctor Avik Deb rushed to intervene, he too was verbally abused. Dr. Deb promptly called the police, who arrived shortly after and brought the situation under control.

The hospital administration was formally notified of the attack and a written complaint has been submitted to the Health department and the medical superintendent. “They assured us the matter would be seriously investigated by tomorrow. But if no action is taken, we may be forced to take further steps. The emergency department will remain functional, but we are considering other measures,” said one of the attending doctors.

Doctors at the hospital expressed frustration over the long-standing security lapses. “We treated over 110 patients between on Saturday afternoon and night. Despite timely treatment given to Bimal Sarkar, we were attacked, this is unacceptable,” a doctor added.

“If we don’t get protection, it will become impossible to continue working here. A strike is not off the table,” he warned.
