Agartala, December 13, 2025: The drug trade in Tripura is spiraling out of control, operating openly under the nose of the administration while the government remains a silent spectator, alleged CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury.

Speaking at the 21st State Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) Tripura Committee, Choudhury launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP, calling it a “shameless and irresponsible government.”

Chaudhury claimed that while earlier only two to four bottles of contraband were seized, under the present regime wagon-loads of narcotics are entering the state. He accused the government of deliberately allowing the drug trade to flourish, thereby destroying the youth.

“There is no employment, no discipline, and no rule of law in the state. Taking advantage of unemployment, the youth are being pushed into addiction. The government could stop this trade if it wanted to, but it has no willpower,” Choudhury said.

The Opposition leader further alleged that more than half of those arrested for drug-related crimes are closely linked with top BJP leaders. He pointed out that many of the accused have photographs with senior leaders including Rajib Bhattacharjee, Sunil Deodhar, and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.

“Why is this happening? The government must explain these connections,” he demanded.

Chaudhury also charged that while small-time peddlers are being arrested, the big players in the drug trade are being shielded. He called for an impartial, high-level investigation into the matter.

Issuing a stern warning, Chaudhury said that unless the government immediately launches a strong anti-drug campaign, the Opposition will be compelled to initiate a larger movement.

The conference was attended by Chaudhury, AIDWA All India General Secretary Mariam Dhawale, along with several state and national leaders of the association.
