Agartala, 23 May 2025: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Tripura State Committee on Friday submitted a detailed charter of demands to the Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar seeking immediate action on pressing issues including drug smuggling, attacks on women and threats to democratic rights.

Leading a delegation, DYFI State Secretary Nabarun Deb personally handed over the memorandum to the DGP demanding that the police administration take a more impartial and proactive stance in upholding law and order.

“Peace and democracy in Tripura are under threat. The police must act impartially to protect people’s rights. Severe action is needed against drug corridors like Damchhera, Churaibari, Mohanpur, and Bishalgarh,” said Nabarun Deb while addressing reporters after the submission.

The memorandum highlighted several critical concerns. It pointed to the 2020 murder and burning of a 22-year-old woman in Mohanpur, and the tragic death of police officer Durga Charan Hrangkhwal allegedly caused by a drug smuggling car as symbols of rising lawlessness. “Such incidents must not go unpunished. We demand swift justice,” Deb added.

DYFI also expressed concern over rising road accidents in Agartala and demanded traffic control after 10 PM. Another key issue raised was the growing threat to freedom of speech, with DYFI alleging that critics of the government are being assaulted and falsely implicated.

“When social media posts criticize the government, people are beaten and arrested. But when nationalists issue death threats, the police remain silent. This double standard must stop,” Deb asserted.

The DGP Anurag Dhankar assured the delegation that their concerns would be reviewed seriously and appropriate steps would be taken.

The letter signed by DYFI leaders including Palash Bhowmik, Sanjoy Das, Santanu Deb and Joydeep Rauth urged the police to restore faith in democratic processes and ensure safety for all.
