Agartala, July 08, 2025: Tripura has emerged as a front-runner in the latest North Eastern Region District SDG Index (2023–24), showing significant progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to hunger and health, according to a report released by NITI Aayog.
The report, developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), highlights notable advancements made by Tripura in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). The state’s improved performance reflects broader regional progress in sustainable development.
“All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura have now attained front-runner status. The share of front-runner districts across the North East has increased from 62% to over 85%, underlining the region’s strong commitment to inclusive growth,” the report stated.
The index also recorded improvements in 93 districts across the region in SDG 2 and SDG 3, identifying these as the most improved goals. Sikkim was recognised for consistent performance across all districts, while Hnahthial in Mizoram topped as the best-performing district overall.
The report was officially launched by Suman Bery, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog; B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO, NITI Aayog; Chanchal Kumar, Secretary, MDoNER; and Dr. Angela Lusigi, UNDP Resident Representative in India. Senior adviser Rajib Kumar Sen and other officials were also present during the event.
This second edition of the index underscores the value of data-driven governance and provides a strategic framework to accelerate progress on SDGs at the grassroots level across India’s North Eastern states.
