Agartala, September 15, 2025: Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Monday defended the state government’s decision to permit the opening of a bar near Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala city, asserting that the approval was granted strictly in accordance with existing guidelines.
The move has sparked sharp criticism from opposition parties, who argue that allowing a bar or what they describe as a “nightclub” in such a culturally significant area of the capital is inappropriate. They have demanded its immediate relocation, citing concerns over public sentiment and urban decorum.
Responding to the backlash, Minister Singha Roy clarified that the establishment in question is a restaurant-cum-bar, not a nightclub, and accused detractors of using misleading terminology to stir confusion. “The license was issued only after thorough scrutiny by the District Magistrate, who forwarded the proposal to the Finance Department,” he said. “All regulatory norms were followed.”
He further elaborated that the bar is permitted to operate between 11 AM and 11 PM, and that sound systems and other operational aspects were carefully reviewed before clearance. Unlike FL (foreign liquor) shops, which cannot be located within 100 meters of schools, colleges, religious institutions, or hospitals, no such restriction applies to bars, the minister noted.
Despite the procedural compliance, Chief Minister Manik Saha has ordered a fresh investigation into the matter following public concern. Minister Singha Roy assured that any necessary action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
