Agartala, December 9, 2025: The Cardiology Department of Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital has successfully restored the health of a critically ill patient suffering from severe arterial blockage in both legs. Thanks to advanced medical intervention, the 56-year-old resident of Sonamura is now walking normally again.

For the past six months, the patient had been experiencing excruciating pain in both legs, which worsened at night and disrupted sleep. Over the last month, the condition deteriorated further, leading to a complete stoppage of blood circulation in the legs.

Under the supervision of Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Rakesh Das, treatment began at GBP Hospital. On November 17, 2025, Dr. Das performed an angiography, which revealed that the patient’s arteries had dried up — a condition medically known as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) or Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD). In this case, the right leg artery was found to be 100 percent blocked from its origin up to the knee.

To address the crisis, Dr. Das advised immediate intervention. On December 2, 2025, a stent was successfully implanted in the blocked artery. Remarkably, the procedure required no surgical incisions. Following the operation, blood circulation was restored, and the patient regained the ability to walk without pain.

The treatment was provided entirely free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. The patient was discharged on December 4, 2025. Officials noted that the same procedure in a private hospital would have cost nearly ₹3 lakh.

The complex operation was carried out by a dedicated team led by Dr. Rakesh Das, along with Associate Professor and Head of Department Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi, Cardiologist Dr. Manna Bhattacharjee, junior doctors Dr. Arghya Pratim Nath, Dr. Anvesha Debnath, Dr. Prantik Roy, Cath Lab Technician Sanjay Ghosh, Cath Lab nurses Debabrata Debnath, Prankrishna Deb, Manas Dutta, Titiksha Majumdar, and Echo Technician Kishan Roy, among others.

The patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and healthcare staff, emphasizing that they received world-class treatment within the state itself, without the need to travel outside Tripura.
