Agartala, September 6, 2025: In a major step to ensure safe and affordable accommodation for working women, the Tripura government is setting up 10 hostels across the state.

Director of Social Welfare and Social Education (SW&SE) Tapan Kumar Das informed that the Union Government’s Department of Expenditure has already sanctioned ₹75.24 crore out of the total project cost of ₹114 crore. “Two hostels will come up in Agartala, while the rest are planned for Bodhjungnagar, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, Ambassa, Udaipur, Belonia and Sabroom,” he said.

The Tripura Housing Board has been assigned to execute the project. Construction work has started at five locations, and the remaining sites are in the final preparatory stage. The state government aims to complete the hostels by the 2025–26 financial year.

Each hostel will have a capacity of 100 women, with facilities including attached kitchens, bathrooms, a gymnasium, park, conference hall and round-the-clock security. Special provisions will also be made for divyangjan working women.

Currently, Tripura has only one working women’s hostel in Agartala with 46 seats, which is insufficient to meet the growing demand. The new hostels are expected to benefit women employed in industrial hubs, private firms, domestic services and other sectors.

Officials noted that the initiative would significantly improve safety and living standards for working women in the state, fulfilling a long-pending demand for proper hostel facilities.
