Agartala, August 06, 2025: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has recommended that the inauguration of the MBB College Lake redevelopment project under the Smart City Mission be postponed until a pending case on the matter is resolved.

The recommendation comes in response to a fresh application submitted by the Environment and Water Conservation Forum under Case No. 98/2025. Citing a news report published in an English daily on August 5, 2025, the Forum noted that Agartala Smart City Limited has announced August 15 as the inauguration date of the redeveloped College Tilla Lake project.

The Forum raised concerns that proceeding with the inauguration while the case remains under the Commission’s consideration would be “fi acquittal”, effectively undermining the very purpose of their complaint. “This could render the case ineffective and defeat the object of environmental justice,” the Forum argued.

Taking the matter seriously, the Commission observed, “The inauguration of the MBB College Lake project at this juncture may negatively affect the subject of the ongoing proceedings.”

In light of this, the Commission has recommended that no action related to the launch or inauguration of the project be undertaken at present. This advisory has been directed to the Urban Development Department, Revenue Department, Chief Conservator of Forests, CEO of Agartala Smart City Limited, and the District Magistrate of West Tripura.

The Commission further clarified, “Even if the date of inauguration has already been announced, it must be deferred until the case is disposed of or until further orders are issued.”

The MBB College Lake redevelopment has been at the center of public and environmental debate, and its legal status remains unresolved before the Commission.
