Agartala, August 12, 2025: Tripura is set to script a new chapter in India’s power generation history with the establishment of the country’s first 120 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power plant at Rokhia. Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL) has initiated the landmark project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which promises enhanced capacity without additional fuel costs, powered by environment-friendly technology.
“This project will ensure a steady and affordable power supply to consumers while setting a new technological benchmark for the country,” said TPGL Managing Director Biswajit Basu.
Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) emerged as the lowest bidder, quoting ₹1,119.30 crore (excluding GST) through a global e-tender. TPGL and MEIL have signed an agreement for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC). The plant will be configured with two gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and one steam turbine (2GT+2HRSG+1ST).
The project will feature Siemens Energy AB’s ‘SGT-800’ gas turbines — each with a 57 MW capacity — known for their exceptional “start-stop” efficiency. This will mark the first time such turbines are installed in India. “The SGT-800 is a world-class, high-efficiency turbine that will significantly help meet Tripura’s base and peak load requirements,” said a Siemens representative.
A six-member delegation from MEIL and Siemens visited the Rokhia site on August 11, followed by a courtesy meeting with TPGL officials in Agartala on August 12.
“With this project, Tripura will move towards self-reliance in power generation and set a historical precedent in India’s energy sector,” Basu affirmed.
