Agartala, May 20, 2025: In a significant move to ensure the enforcement of the Centre’s recent directive on import restrictions, the Industries and Commerce Department of the Tripura government convened a high-level meeting with local importers on Monday. The meeting aimed at facilitating the strict implementation of the Central guidelines that prohibit the import of specific categories of goods from Bangladesh through land customs stations and Integrated Check Posts (ICPs).
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sailesh Kumar Yadav, Director of the Industries and Commerce Department. Key representatives from the Land Port Authority of India, Border Security Force (BSF), and Customs Department were also present to address concerns and provide clarity to stakeholders.
The Centre has restricted the import of at least seven categories of Bangladeshi goods, including readymade garments, processed foods, fruits, cotton, plastics, PVC finished goods, and wooden furniture. These items can no longer be brought into India through Tripura’s land ports and ICPs.
“We conducted this meeting with BSF, Customs officials, and importers to discuss the Centre’s directive. The restrictions are clear, and we are seeking full cooperation for effective implementation. Importers had a few queries which have been resolved during the session,” said a senior department official.
The official also noted that the department plans to hold follow-up meetings to assess compliance and address emerging challenges.
Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that importers appeared generally supportive of the decision. “They may face some initial difficulties, but the response was largely positive,” the official remarked.
