Agartala, June 18, 2025: A group of eminent poets, writers, artists, intellectuals, and cultural workers from Tripura has strongly condemned the recent attack on Rabindranath Tagore’s historic Kacharibari in Shahzadpur, Bangladesh. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Dr. Muhammad Yunus through the Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner (BAHC) in Agartala on Thursday, the delegation expressed deep shock and concern over the incident, terming it an assault on cultural heritage and universal human values.
The memorandum, signed by noted figures including poet and Professor Mihir Deb, poet Ratul Deb Burman, painter Swapan Nandi, dramatist Bibhu Bhattacharjee and Professor Mujahid Rahman, describes the act as “despicable and shameful,” calling for swift justice and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
“Rabindranath Tagore is a towering symbol of unity, secularism, and humanism. Any attack on his legacy is not merely an act of vandalism, but an affront to the shared cultural consciousness of both India and Bangladesh,” the memorandum reads.
The intellectuals underscored Tagore’s universal influence, reminding that the Nobel laureate is celebrated as a national figure in both countries—his compositions being the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. They urged the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure that such acts of radicalism and intolerance are not allowed any place in a country that cherishes the legacy of Tagore.
“Rabindranath stands against communalism, radical nationalism, and fundamentalism. To oppose him is to oppose the very idea of humanity,” they emphasized.
The memorandum concludes with a heartfelt plea to the government of Bangladesh to protect cultural heritage and uphold the ideals that Tagore represented.
