Agartala, November 21, 2025: Tension prevailed in Tripura’s Khumulwng under West district on Thursday evening after unidentified miscreants allegedly set ablaze the local BJP party office. By the time fire-fighters and police reached the spot, the structure had been completely gutted. BJP leaders accused TIPRA Motha supporters of staging the attack.
In a separate incident at Joy Krishna Kobra Para, the house of BJP worker Shahi Debbarma was reportedly vandalised by a group of seven to eight assailants, also suspected to be TIPRA Motha supporters. Family members alleged that the attackers forced their way inside, smashed furniture and damaged household appliances including a television, refrigerator and inverter. When the family tried to stop them, they were allegedly assaulted. Debbarma’s wife claimed she was pushed to the ground even after pleading with the attackers. Before fleeing, the group also cut off the electricity supply to the house.
Radhapur Police Station staff along with the Jirania SDPO and West District Additional SP Himadri Das, rushed to the area with additional forces to stabilise the situation. However, fear and tension continue to grip residents.
The region has been on edge since Wednesday night following a bomb explosion near a shop in Dukhia Kobra area. The shopkeeper, who asserted that he has no political affiliation, hinted that recent clashes between BJP and TIPRA Motha supporters may have triggered the attack. Several locals expressed similar views.
Meanwhile, during a visit to the spot, MDC Ganesh Debbarma blamed BJP workers for the incident and controversially alleged that “BJP members steal goats and pigs from people’s homes to eat.” Mandai MLA Swapna Debbarma was also present during the heated exchange of accusations.
Despite visible camaraderie between leaders of both parties in recent weeks, tensions at the grassroots level continue to escalate. With multiple incidents reported in quick succession, Khumulwng remains on high alert as authorities struggle to contain the rising political unrest.
Meanwhile, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma said “Yesterday, I visited the Takarjala BJP Mandal office, accompanied by former MP Rebati Tripura, State General Secretary Bipin Debbarma, and MDC Sanjib Reang, to inspect the site of the shameful and orchestrated attack carried out by miscreants affiliated with Tipra Motha. This act of violence is not just condemnable, it is a direct assault on the democratic values we uphold.”
“In a democracy, ideological differences must be addressed through dialogue and reason, not through intimidation or violence. Those who fail to win the trust of the people often resort to such desperate tactics. I have already held discussions with the administration to ensure a thorough investigation and to demand strict action against those responsible. Let it be clear: such attacks will not deter our commitment to peace, development, and democratic principles in Tripura,” he added.
