Agartala, June 03, 2025: Torrential monsoon rains have continued to batter Tripura since May 31, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Khowai, West Tripura and South Tripura districts till 8:30 am of Tuesday. A yellow alert has also been issued for five other districts, the Revenue Department confirmed in a press release on Monday.
“In view of the continuous heavy rainfall, 66 relief camps have been opened across the state. A total of 10,813 people from 2,926 families have taken shelter in these camps and are being provided with food, medical care, and other essential services,” the Revenue Department stated.
West Tripura remains the worst affected, with 2,352 families accommodated in 50 relief camps. According to preliminary estimates, 219 houses have been damaged across Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, South Tripura and North Tripura. “Among them, 1 house is completely destroyed, 104 are severely damaged, and 124 houses are partially damaged,” the department added, noting that a detailed assessment is underway.
In Gomati district, Forest Department teams have cleared key roads obstructed by fallen trees. Meanwhile, in a positive development, the water level of the Howrah River in Agartala has receded significantly and is now flowing below the danger mark.
“The situation is being monitored at the highest level,” the Revenue Department assured.
In a gesture of solidarity, Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb visited eight flood shelters in West Tripura district. “We are facing a tough natural calamity. I have personally distributed 2,250 food packets to affected individuals to ensure they have enough to sustain themselves over the next few days,” Deb said.
Each food packet includes 5 kg rice, 500 grams each of pulses, soybeans, onions, potatoes, along with mustard oil, salt, and biscuits.
Though currently in Delhi, Deb remains actively engaged. “I have been in regular contact with state officials regarding the flood situation. Even during past disasters, I have ensured food distribution across Tripura. This time too, my support will continue,” he affirmed.
