Agartala, January 7, 2026: Tripura’s Parliamentary Affairs and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday described the late Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen as a “big-hearted man” whose nationalist ideals and cultural contributions left a lasting impact on Tripura’s political and social life.
Speaking at a condolence meeting held in the Assembly, Nath said Sen’s passing was “a great loss” to the state. “Political figures should have big hearts. Biswa Bandhu Sen was one such leader who believed deeply in nationalist thinking,” he remarked.
Recalling his association with Sen since the early 1980s, Nath highlighted the multifaceted personality of the former Speaker. “He was not only a political leader but also a poet, literary figure, singer, and actor. He loved Rabindra Sangeet and was very close to the people of Dharmanagar,” Nath said, adding that their bond grew stronger through years of political activity.
The Minister noted that Sen began his journey in student politics and stood firmly against dictatorship. “He was well aware of Assembly affairs and often guided the government on how to work for the people. Whether in opposition or in the ruling party, he always raised important issues for public welfare,” Nath said.
Reflecting on the broader meaning of politics, Nath described it as “the authoritative allocation of values for society,” calling it a classical art that demands creativity, responsibility, and sacrifice. “Politics is not merely a profession. It is a work of self-sacrifice for the welfare of society, the state, and the world,” he said.
Nath also acknowledged the challenges faced by politicians. “Leaders often face abuse, but it is politicians who clean up the filth of society—no one else does,” he observed.
Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury were among those present at the ceremony.
