Agartala, September 23, 2025: The Tripura State Pollution Control Board has announced a set of strict regulations to ensure an eco-friendly and pollution-free celebration during the upcoming Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, and Kali Puja.

Science, Technology & Environment Minister Animesh Debbarma on Monday urged citizens to cooperate in maintaining environmental balance during the festive season.

“Our traditions and festivals must not come at the cost of public health and the environment. We appeal to all puja committees and devotees to strictly follow the guidelines,” said Debbarma while briefing media personnel at Secretariat in Agartala city on Monday evening.

According to the notification, the use of microphones, loudspeakers, and musical instruments is strictly prohibited from midnight to 6 AM during the puja days. Firecrackers producing sound above 90 decibels within a 5-meter distance are banned, and only Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO)-approved crackers can be used between 8 PM and 10 PM. “Unrestricted use of loudspeakers and firecrackers causes immense suffering to hospital patients, students, and the elderly. This year, enforcement will be stricter,” Debbarma added.

The guidelines also prohibit the use of Plaster of Paris, synthetic paints containing heavy metals, and thermocol items for idol-making or decoration. Only biodegradable materials and natural colours will be permitted. The maximum permissible height for idols is fixed at 20 feet, while pandals should not exceed 40 feet. Idol immersion must be carried out only at designated sites identified by local authorities.

On the use of sound systems, the minister stressed, “As per government orders, sound limiters in all microphones and public address systems are mandatory. Anyone violating this will face action.”

The Pollution Control Board has also mandated prior permission for the use of microphones during puja events and for vehicles carrying idols for immersion. Additionally, single-use plastic is completely prohibited in pandal decoration, prasad distribution, and other puja-related activities.

Concluding, Debbarma appealed to the people, “Let this festive season be a celebration of devotion as well as responsibility. Together, we can ensure that our pujas are joyous, safe, and eco-friendly.”
