Agartala, March 23, 2026: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath launched a scathing attack on the opposition CPI(M) in the Tripura Assembly, alleging widespread encroachment of government land during its tenure and calling for bulldozer-led demolition of “unauthorised” party offices.
The remarks came on the concluding day of the Budget Session after CPI(M) legislator Shyamal Chakraborty sought details on alleged land occupation in Boxanagar, Sepahijala district. Responding, Nath said the administration had already initiated action through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate against illegal occupation.
Accusing the Left of large-scale land grabs, Nath claimed over 100 kani of government land had been encroached upon for rubber plantations during CPI(M)’s rule. “From South to North Tripura, land was forcibly occupied. Even private property was not spared,” he charged, urging the opposition to “learn from the Chief Minister’s decisive action.”
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha backed Nath’s statement, citing a case in Amarpur, Gomati district, where a CPI(M) office allegedly encroached on 556 square feet of khas land. He noted that eviction orders issued in 2018 were upheld by the High Court after CPI(M) challenged them.
The exchange triggered heated moments in the House, with allegations and counter-allegations dominating the final day of the Budget Session.
