Agartala, September 16, 2025: Tripura’s Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das on Tuesday addressed the Annual Review Meeting (2024–2025) of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Piggery, held at Pragya Bhavan, Agartala. The event brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the country to deliberate on the future of piggery and its significance in strengthening both nutrition and rural livelihoods.
In his keynote address, Minister Das underscored the critical role of piggery in enhancing nutritional security and empowering livestock farmers in the state. “This sector not only meets the dietary needs of our people but also offers a sustainable source of income for thousands,” he stated.
Highlighting Tripura’s unique market dynamics, the minister pointed out that with 98 percent of the population consuming non-vegetarian food, the demand for pig meat remains robust. He further noted that over 37 percent of the state’s farmers are engaged in piggery, making it a key livelihood activity in rural areas.
Minister Das emphasized the economic viability of pig farming, describing it as a low-investment, high-return enterprise. He urged the youth to view piggery as a viable career option capable of promoting self-reliance and entrepreneurship in rural communities.
The minister also drew attention to the ongoing development of the Devipur Government Pig Farm, where efforts are focused on breeding high-yielding pig varieties to boost productivity and enhance farmers’ income.
“As Tripura continues to invest in agricultural innovation and rural development, piggery stands out as a sector with immense potential to uplift communities and drive inclusive growth,” Minister Das remarked.
The event featured detailed discussions on improving pig farming and rearing practices, with particular focus on their contribution to nutritional well-being and economic advancement. Minister Das expressed gratitude to the organizers for selecting Tripura as the host state, reaffirming the region’s growing significance in India’s livestock sector.
