Agartala, August 27, 2025: A tragic incident shook North Tripura’s Kanchanpur subdivision on Tuesday afternoon when a 7-year-old girl drowned in a stream near Nilmani Para under Chandipur ADC Village.

Local sources informed that four children had gone to bathe in the stream, but only three returned home safely. The missing child identified as Shyamali Reang could not be traced initially. Later, it was found that she had drowned.

Alarmed villagers immediately informed the Kanchanpur Fire department, following which firefighters rushed to the spot. The search operation was conducted jointly by fire service personnel, Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (DCM), Sub-Inspector Noren Reang of Kanchanpur Police Station, police forces and TSR jawans.

After nearly four hours of relentless efforts, Shyamali’s body was recovered around 8 PM. Her remains were shifted to Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. Police said the body would be handed over to her family after the scheduled post-mortem examination at 11 AM on Wednesday.

The incident has left Nilmani Para in deep mourning. Villagers described the death as “heart-wrenching,” while the family remains inconsolable. Police from Kanchanpur Station have registered a case and are probing the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
