Agartala, February 5, 2026:  An incident involving the alleged abduction of a minor girl from the Jamjuri area under Kakraban police station in Gomati district triggered widespread concern in the locality.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on January 13, when a youth identified as Sumit Ghosh allegedly abducted the minor from in front of Jamjuri School, within the jurisdiction of Kakraban police station. Following the incident, the girl’s family searched extensively among relatives and acquaintances but failed to trace her whereabouts.

After five days of unsuccessful efforts, the girl’s mother lodged a written complaint at Kakraban police station on January 18. Taking the matter seriously, the police immediately launched an investigation, which was assigned to Investigating Officer Purnima Das.

During the course of the investigation, police, with the help of technical inputs and intelligence sources, ascertained that the minor girl and the accused were hiding in the neighbouring state of Assam. Acting on the information, a special team from Kakraban police station, led by IO Ayu Purnima Das, proceeded to Assam and carried out search operations in coordination with the local police.

On February 4, the police successfully rescued the minor girl and apprehended the accused from a specific location in Assam. Both were subsequently brought back to Kakraban police station after completing necessary legal formalities.

A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 137(2), 249(C), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the accused has been produced before the Court in Udaipur on Thursday.

The family of the minor girl has expressed relief following her safe recovery, while local residents have praised the prompt action of the Kakraban police and the successful inter-state operation.
