Agartala, September 27, 2025: A heart-wrenching case of child sale has come to light in Tripura’s Shilachari block under Karbook subdivision of Gomati district, where a three-month-old girl was reportedly sold by her mother for Rs 10,000, with an additional Rs 1,500 as a tip.
According to reports, the infant was handed over to one Ranjit Chakma, a resident of Jalaya Madhu Mog Para.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, the baby’s father, Kanchan Chakma, explained that the child was not receiving breast milk and had to be sustained on costly formula milk, which became financially unbearable for the impoverished family. Poverty, he said, forced them into the desperate act of selling their daughter.
However, the parents soon regretted their decision and attempted to reclaim the child. But the buyer, Ranjit Chakma, has allegedly refused to return the infant, leaving the family in anguish.
The incident has triggered shock and concern in the locality. Authorities are yet to take action, but residents are calling for urgent intervention to reunite the child with her biological parents.
