Agartala, December 3, 2025: Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb has urged the Union government to upgrade Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport to international status. Raising the issue in Parliament today, Deb pressed the Civil Aviation Minister to prioritize the declaration process in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Deb highlighted that Agartala Airport serves as a crucial gateway for passengers traveling to and from the Northeast. According to available data, the facility can handle around 1,000 domestic and 200 international passengers during peak hours. It is equipped with 20 check-in counters and has an annual handling capacity of nearly 30 lakh passengers.
The Tripura government has already provided Rs 18.85 crore to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to facilitate the commencement of international flight operations. Stressing the urgency, Deb demanded that immigration check-posts be notified at the earliest to pave the way for international connectivity.
