Agartala, December 22, 2025: Tripura’s former Chief Minister and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), urging its leadership to speak out against the alleged persecution of minorities in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Addressing the media, Deb said the TMC was indulging in political theatrics while remaining silent on what he described as serious attacks on Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh. He alleged that members of the minority community were being targeted openly, with incidents of arson, violence and killings taking place in public view. Given Bangladesh’s proximity to West Bengal, Deb questioned the TMC’s reluctance to raise the issue at national and international platforms.

The BJP MP further alleged that Hindus in West Bengal were facing difficulties in organising traditional religious festivals such as Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja and Jagadhatri Puja. He claimed that idols were being vandalised by mobs and said the TMC leadership should focus on protecting religious rights instead of creating unrest. Deb suggested that if the party was genuinely concerned about Bengalis, its leadership should directly raise the issue in Dhaka and advocate for the rights of Hindu minorities.

In an indirect attack on TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Deb remarked that the party no longer functioned as a democratic political organisation but resembled a corporate structure, where decision-making power was concentrated within a select few. He added that TMC MPs should reflect on their political standing within the party.

Deb also accused the TMC government of failing to adequately honour Bengal’s iconic figures. He said that despite the state being the birthplace of luminaries such as Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ramakrishna Paramhansa, there was a lack of prominent initiatives to commemorate their contributions. Drawing a comparison, he cited the installation of the Statue of Unity as an example of how national icons were honoured elsewhere.
