Agartala, June 18, 2025: A cloud of mystery surrounds the sudden death of a 29-year-old housewife in the Shibbari area of Dharmanagar, North Tripura district. The deceased identified as Pushpita Chowdhury was found hanging in the kitchen of her residence in the early hours of Wednesday.

The incident reportedly took place around 1 AM. According to her husband Bidhan Chakraborty, the day had passed uneventfully. “She served dinner to everyone after I returned from the shop at around 11 PM. Everything seemed normal,” he recounted.

Bidhan, who had taken on the night duty of attending to his ailing father, who is bedridden after a brain stroke, said that a disagreement arose between him and Pushpita over this decision.

“She asked why I had taken that responsibility when my brother was already doing it. She was upset that I didn’t consult her,” said Bidhan, adding that when he returned home after briefly speaking to his brother, he found the door locked from inside.

“She told me through the door, ‘Serve your parents, you don’t need a wife and children!’ I kept pleading, but she wouldn’t open the door,” he stated.

What followed was a cryptic farewell. Bidhan received an SMS from Pushpita that read, “Be well with your family.” Moments later, she made a 12-second video call, during which she said, “You are serving, but you will understand the day I am no longer here.”

Alarmed, Bidhan rushed back to the house and searched every room. “It was dark inside. Finally, I found her hanging in the kitchen. My brother and I brought her down and rushed to the hospital in an e-rickshaw,” he said. Doctors at Dharmanagar District Hospital declared Pushpita dead on arrival.

Police from Dharmanagar Women’s Police Station reached the scene and have launched an investigation. Family members are currently being interrogated.

While preliminary reports suggest suicide, questions loom large over the circumstances. Pushpita’s maternal uncle has strongly alleged foul play. “My niece did not take her own life. She was murdered,” he told reporters. A case has been registered at the Women’s Police Station following the family’s complaint.

The local community remains tense as speculations continue. Authorities believe the video message Pushpita left could be a crucial lead in the investigation.

“We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness. A post-mortem is being conducted, and the body will be handed over to the family as per legal procedures,” a police official stated.
