Agartala, March 28, 2026: Ending days of speculation, Amtali police station staff have arrested an ONGC junior fireman accused of assaulting an 8-year-old specially abled girl in the ONGC Colony area.
Reportedly, the incident took place on March 23 when the minor girl, while playing, allegedly painted the personal car of the accused, identified as Deep Golap Das alias David. Enraged by the act, he allegedly strangled the child and physically assaulted her.
Following the incident, the girl’s family lodged a written complaint at Amtali police station. The victim was immediately taken to Tripura Medical College Hospital at Hapania for treatment. Medical reports confirmed signs of strangulation and visible injury marks on her knees.
Seeking a fair investigation and justice, the family also approached the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights with a formal complaint. The case soon drew public attention, with growing demands for strict action against the accused.
Adding to the pressure, Dr. H. Kerala D’Souza, a former member of the State Police Commission, publicly demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. Subsequently, Amtali police intensified efforts to trace and apprehend him.
On Friday night, police successfully arrested Deep Golap Das. However, soon after his arrest, he reportedly claimed to be unwell, prompting police to take him to Hapania Medical College Hospital. After primary treatment, he was brought back to the police station.
Meanwhile, attempts were allegedly made by some individuals, including the accused’s wife, to secure his release, but these efforts did not succeed.
Police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 126(2), 117(2), 305(2), 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the POCSO Act (Case No. 25/2026).
On Saturday afternoon, the accused was produced before the court.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents of ONGC Colony, who expressed shock that such an act could be committed by an employee. Locals have demanded strict punishment to ensure justice for the minor victim.
