Agartala, September 19, 2025: The Tripura Legislative Assembly opened its 8th session of the 13th Assembly on Friday amid uproar after the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) decided to curtail the number of sitting days. The House will reconvene on September 23, with Monday’s sitting cancelled due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state.

The decision sparked protests from Congress and CPI(M), who accused the BJP government of bypassing public issues. Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy alleged large-scale corruption in state departments and demanded an extension of at least three days for discussion. CPI(M) MLA Shyamal Chakraborty supported the demand.

Roy also questioned the adjournment for the Prime Minister’s programme, stressing that unemployment, farmers’ concerns, and other issues needed priority. Former Minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman termed the decision unjustified, saying, “Does it mean the House will not function just because the PM is coming? For us, people’s issues should be equally important.” Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury added that suspending the session during the PM’s visit “does not send a good message.”

Defending the move, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy said Congress members had skipped the BAC meeting despite being notified. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath argued that with officials occupied in the PM’s programme, no one would be available in the House. He assured that more sitting days would be allotted in the next session.

The BAC report was later tabled by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul and passed by a vote.
