Agartala, August 16, 2025: The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has rolled out a major plan to generate 70 megawatts (MW) of electricity by installing solar panels on rooftops of government buildings across the state.

A survey identified nearly 2,000 government establishments suitable for rooftop solar units. Officials say the initiative will not only reduce pressure on depleting gas-based power plants but also strengthen the state’s renewable energy capacity.

“Natural gas reserves are depleting rapidly. To ensure long-term energy sustainability, the state government is prioritizing solar power generation,” said TREDA Joint Director Debabrata Sukladas. He informed that an initial target of 10.5 MW has been set, with the tendering process already in its final stage.

Tripura’s solar power capacity has grown from just 3 MW seven years ago to 26 MW at present. With the new initiative, officials expect both generation and employment to rise. “The transition will also create jobs. We will work with the skill development department to train solar technicians and supervisors, ensuring adequate manpower for installation and maintenance,” Sukladas added.

The state is currently grappling with a fall in gas-based power output. The OTPC-run Palatana plant, with an installed capacity of 726 MW, is producing only 520 MW, while NEEPCO’s Manarchak unit generates 60 MW against its 100 MW capacity. Similarly, the RC Nagar plant is producing just 80 MW out of 135 MW.

Tripura’s daily power demand stands at around 370 MW but is projected to rise to nearly 700 MW by 2030 due to rapid urbanization and industrial growth. Officials believe scaling up solar energy will be the key to bridging the gap.
