Agartala, October 25, 2025: In a major recovery, Tripura Police on Friday night seized a suspicious vehicle and recovered ₹15 lakh in cash during an intensive search operation.
Acting on a secret tip-off, police intercepted a Maruti Wagon R bearing registration number TR01BU0380 and brought it to Bishramganj Police Station for inspection. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajit Debbarma led the search, which continued for nearly an hour. During the process, officers discovered three black polythene packets concealed beside the CNG gas tank under the seat of the car.
Upon opening the packets in the presence of senior officers, police found bundles of ₹500 notes amounting to ₹15 lakh. A bank employee was called to the station to count the money under CCTV surveillance.
Sepahijala Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajiv Sutradhar, along with Sonamura SDPO Shashi Mohan Debbarma, arrived at the station soon after being informed.
Speaking to the media personnel, ASP Sutradhar said the car’s driver, Shahin Mia (25), son of Siraj Mia of Melaghar’s Chandigarh area, and co-passenger Shantanu Saha (37), son of Niranjan Saha from Melaghar’s Sukantapalli, have been detained for questioning.
“The duo failed to produce any valid documents to justify possession of such a large amount of cash. We suspect the money is linked to illegal transactions. The matter is under thorough investigation,” ASP Sutradhar stated.
OC Ajit Debbarma added that if the accused cannot furnish valid proof, legal action will follow. The recovery has caused a stir in the Bishramganj area, coming just days after police seized six cartons of expensive mobile phones at a nearby checkpoint.
Authorities are probing possible links between the two incidents.
