Agartala, October 25, 2025: A disturbing incident during the immersion of a Kali idol under Belonia police station in South Tripura has sparked outrage after video footage allegedly showed a police officer misbehaving with a woman performer in public and cop was physically assaulted by mob.
According to local reports, the incident took place around 10 pm on Friday during the immersion procession organized by the Oriental Club. The evening began with a cultural program that drew participation from residents of the area, followed by a musical procession accompanying the idol to Mahuri Ghat, located about 500 meters from the club premises.
Locals alleged that Belonia Police Station OC Inspector Shibu Ranjan Das, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, boarded the vehicle carrying the musical troupe and misbehaved with several artists, including a woman performer. The situation quickly escalated, and some members of the public allegedly dragged the officer from the vehicle and assaulted him.
Media personnel covering the event also claimed that they were prevented from filming the incident. They alleged that SDPO Rishab, IPS, who arrived later, snatched a journalist’s camera and tried to stop media coverage.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with demands for immediate investigation and disciplinary action against the officers involved. Local sources have also accused certain police personnel of having links with illegal activities in the area, including drug trafficking and gambling, though these allegations are yet to be officially verified.
As of now, Belonia police have detained three individuals accused of assaulting the officer during the chaos at the club premises. The Tripura Police Headquarters has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
Public sentiment remains tense in the area, with many residents demanding that the state government and higher police authorities take strict action to restore public trust in law enforcement.
