Agartala, September 05, 2025: Tripura police have launched an investigation into a massive financial fraud in which ₹16.38 crore was siphoned off from the account of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) through the use of cloned cheques.

The case was registered at West Agartala police station after UCO Bank’s zonal manager, Sanjib Roy, reported that six fraudulent withdrawals were made during August and early September.

Speaking with Northeast Today on Friday, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala police station Rana Chatterjee said, “Acting on a complaint from a bank official, we filed an FIR against unknown fraudsters on Thursday. Preliminary investigation suggests that the culprits, reportedly operating from Hyderabad, used six cloned cheques to withdraw the money.”

Police officials revealed that the fraudsters forged the signature of AMC Chief Executive Officer D.K. Chakma, even as the original cheques remained intact with the civic body. Investigators have already collected CCTV footage from UCO Bank’s Kaman Chowmuhani branch to identify individuals who submitted the forged instruments.

“Once we trace those who deposited the cloned cheques, crucial leads will emerge in the case,” Chatterjee added.
