Agartala, November 25, 2025: In a major crackdown on illegal tobacco trade, Tripura Police on Tuesday arrested a man and seized 16 cartons of Burmese-made Oris cigarettes valued at approximately Rs 15 lakh from the Kanajhuri area at Damcherra under North Tripura district.
Acting on a secret tip-off, a police team led by Damcherra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sanjay Majumdar conducted a raid at the residence of the accused. During the operation, police arrested 38-year-old Abdul Fatar, also known as Asad, son of the late Abdul Salam, and recovered the illegal consignment from his house.
According to police sources, the cigarettes were stored for black market distribution.
The seizure is part of intensified efforts by North District Police, under the guidance of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, to curb smuggling and ensure a drug-free Tripura.
Further investigation is underway, and police are trying to trace the network involved in the illegal trade.
