Agartala, August 6, 2025: Tripura police recovered a large consignment of Burmese cigarettes worth ₹20 lakh from a Bolero vehicle at the Chinibagan Naka Point in Kailashahar on Wednesday. The vehicle bearing registration number TR02F-0799 was intercepted during routine checking while it was en route from Dharmanagar to Kailashahar.
Acting on suspicion, police conducted a thorough search and recovered 39 cartons of Burmese cigarettes from the vehicle. The driver identified as Sudip Nath (38), a resident of Tilthai in Panisagar, North Tripura district was immediately taken into custody. A team from the Border Security Force (BSF) also played a significant role in supporting the police during the operation.
Speaking on the operation, Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar police station Tapas Malakar said, “In the initial investigation, we have come to know that these Burmese cigarettes were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh. We have detained the vehicle and the driver, and a case will be registered under appropriate sections.”
He further added, “This seizure was possible due to the coordinated efforts of the police and BSF at the Chinibagan Naka Point. Such joint operations are crucial in curbing cross-border smuggling.”
Police sources confirmed that interrogation of the arrested driver is underway, and efforts are on to identify others involved in the smuggling network.
