Agartala, September 15, 2025: In a major crackdown on cross-border smuggling, Panisagar police seized Burmese cigarettes worth approximately Rs 70 lakh late last night from Jalebasa naka point under Dharmanagar subdivision. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement intercepted a Bolero pickup van suspected of transporting contraband along the Dharmanagar–Kailashahar national highway, a route frequently exploited by traffickers for illegal trade.

During the operation, officers recovered a massive cache of Burmese-made cigarettes concealed inside the vehicle. One youth was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Initial estimates suggest the seized consignment is valued at Rs 60–70 lakh.

Police sources informed, the arrested individual had transported the cigarettes from Mizoram. A formal case has been registered under relevant sections of the law, and further investigation is underway to trace the broader smuggling network.

Authorities have intensified surveillance along key transit routes in North Tripura, as the region continues to witness a surge in contraband activity.
