Agartala, August 13, 2025: Tripura royal scion and political leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya has strongly criticised the recent Supreme Court directive ordering the removal of all stray dogs from the Delhi-NCR region within eight weeks.
Calling the move “hasty” and “inhumane,” Pradyot said, “There is clearly no strategic planning, no logistics check, and most importantly, no consultation with animal welfare organisations, which have the expertise to guide such initiatives in a humane and effective manner.”
The Supreme Court’s order, issued earlier this month, requires authorities to clear stray dogs from public spaces in the national capital region within two months. However, Pradyot warned that implementing such an order without proper rehabilitation plans could set a “dangerous precedent.”
“The idea of removing animals from the streets without proper rehabilitation or long-term care is a dangerous precedent to set. Today, it is Delhi NCR; tomorrow, it could be anywhere in the country,” he cautioned.
Expressing his willingness to support shelter-building and humane solutions for strays in Tripura, Pradyot said, “We must understand that this world belongs to them too, and it is our responsibility to show compassion, love, and care for all living beings.”
He urged the authorities to reconsider the order and collaborate with animal welfare groups to ensure “the safety and dignity of both humans and animals alike.”
Meanwwhile, it is worthy to mention here that the Supreme Court-appointed amicus curiae recommended that stray dogs be relocated to shelters and not reintroduced onto public streets emphasizing the inherent right of individuals to move freely without the threat of dog attacks or physical harm.
