Agartala, April 21, 2026: Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the State Public Works Department (PWD), on Tuesday carried out an on-the-spot inspection of the ongoing embankment construction along the Muhuri River in Belonia subdivision, reviewing both the flood protection structure and the adjoining road project.
Touring the site, the Secretary assessed the pace and quality of work and later addressed a press conference at the Belonia Circuit House. He informed that nearly 80 to 90 percent of the project—covering the embankment as well as an approximately 8-kilometre road running alongside it—has already been completed. Expressing confidence in the progress, he said the remaining work is expected to be finished within the next one to one-and-a-half months.
Emphasizing the urgency ahead of the monsoon season, Gitte stated that clear directives have been issued to concerned officials to expedite the remaining work and ensure the structural safety of the embankment. He added that an allocation of around ₹70 to ₹75 crore has been made for the project.
Highlighting community support, the Secretary acknowledged the cooperation of local residents and the Belonia Municipal Council, noting that their involvement has significantly contributed to the smooth execution of the work. During the visit, he also inspected the Ishan Chandra Nagar and Ballamukha areas.
Gitte further informed that the feasibility of installing a sluice gate at the Belonia chhara (stream) is under examination, which could enhance water management in the region.
He also held discussions with district officials and engineers, stressing timely completion to safeguard the lives and properties of residents. Senior officials, including the District Magistrate of South District and PWD engineers, accompanied him during the inspection.
The initiative comes in response to damages caused during the previous monsoon, when rising water levels in the Muhuri River impacted nearby areas, prompting the need for durable flood protection measures.
