Agartala, June 26, 2025: Tripura has witnessed a significant 34% reduction in road traffic accident (RTA) deaths this year, following a state-wide crackdown on traffic violations, said Superintendent of Traffic Police Kanta Jangir on Thursday.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, SP Jangir attributed the decline to the department’s intensified enforcement campaign that began on June 9. “A special drive is currently underway across the state to curb violations such as non-standard and fake number plates, plate tampering, use of loud silencers, and road permit irregularities,” she said.

The enforcement drive has been particularly active in high-traffic zones of Agartala, including North Gate, RMS Chowmuhani, Ashram Chowmuhani, AD Nagar, and Post Office Chowmuhani. “We have so far identified 635 non-standard number plates. Notices and challans have been issued, and 26 two-wheelers were seized. Just today, 55 fake or tampered number plates were detected and confiscated,” SP Jangir informed.

In an effort to reduce accidents, a dedicated team has surveyed various black spots and accident-prone areas across the state. “Our team is identifying the causes of frequent mishaps, and the findings will be forwarded to the concerned departments for corrective measures,” she added.

Additional initiatives include increasing checkpoints (nakas), deploying interceptor vehicles, and conducting evening traffic checks between 6 PM and 8 PM.

Highlighting the impact of these efforts, SP Jangir said, “There has been an 11% decline in total road accidents, a 32% reduction in fatal accidents, and a 34% drop in deaths compared to the same period last year.”
