Agartala, July 24, 2025: Tripura has taken a significant leap in its renewable energy journey by generating 2 megawatts (MW) of electricity through solar power, with the state aiming to boost this capacity to 50 MW within the next year.
According to a press release issued by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), this milestone marks a key stride towards the state’s goal of energy self-reliance. The achievement is largely credited to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a rooftop solar initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024.
The scheme enables households to generate their own electricity and contribute surplus power back to the grid in exchange for financial incentives. “So far, 15,730 households in Tripura have registered under the scheme. Solar panel installations have been completed at 591 sites, and 516 beneficiaries have received government subsidies,” the TSECL stated.
Highlighting the scheme’s impact, the release revealed that 117 consumers managed to bring their electricity bills down to zero this month and collectively earned ₹43,545 by feeding excess electricity into the grid. These payments were directly transferred to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
Under the scheme, eligible consumers can receive subsidies of up to ₹85,800. A 1 kW rooftop solar system is estimated to produce around 100 units of electricity per month—sufficient to power an average household in the state.
“This is not just about saving money; it’s about creating income. As power prices rise, utilizing rooftops for solar energy is both economically and environmentally wise,” the release emphasized.
With a new target of 50 MW generation set for the coming year, TSECL has called on all electricity consumers across the state to register on the national portal and take advantage of the government-backed scheme.
