Agartala, July 01, 2025: Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday said that Tripura has witnessed “unprecedented development” in the power sector since 2018, marked by a sharp rise in infrastructure, the integration of advanced technologies, and a focus on renewable energy.

Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed 33 KV sub-station at Ranir Bazar in Majlishpur Assembly constituency, Nath highlighted that the ₹10.70 crore facility has been developed under the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP). The new sub-station is expected to improve power reliability and reduce outages in the region.

“In the last seven years, the power sector in Tripura has undergone a transformational journey,” Nath said. “We had just 12 33 KV sub-stations in the past 35 years. Today, we have built 20 more. It reflects the pace of development under the current government.”

Electricity consumers have increased from 7 lakh to 10.31 lakh since 2018, adding 3.31 lakh new connections. The length of 132 KV transmission lines has doubled from 485 km to 986 km. The number of 33 KV sub-stations rose from 42 to 74, and 11 KV sub-stations grew from 16,821 to 21,598. Underground cable coverage expanded from 95 km to 571 km. Prepaid meters now number 1,61,700, while smart meters installed total 71,946.

Nath also stated that efforts are on to ensure uninterrupted power supply to hospitals across the state, with dedicated connections planned for facilities including Ranir Bazar Primary Health Centre.

“We are committed to ensuring that critical services like healthcare are never disrupted due to power cuts,” the Minister emphasized.

He noted that electricity in Tripura is mainly generated from natural gas, but with declining reserves of gas and coal, the government is prioritizing solar energy expansion in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a sustainable future.

Nath also said a ₹1800 crore project to modernize the state’s power transmission infrastructure is underway. As part of this: 8 of 9 planned 132 KV sub-stations have already been completed; The capacity of 7 old 132 KV sub-stations is being upgraded; Advanced cables are being installed to replace aging lines, including the stretch from Agartala’s 79 Tila to Rukhia.

In a push towards technological innovation, Nath announced that drone surveillance would be deployed to detect illegal ‘hook lines’, and live-line working technology will be adopted to conduct maintenance without shutting down power.

He also mentioned plans for a 400 KV sub-station at Suryamaninagar, aimed at strengthening Tripura’s internal grid and ensuring better load management.

Calling for public cooperation, Nath said: “To prevent electricity theft and ensure a stable supply for all, every citizen’s support is crucial. We must eliminate the misuse of hook lines together.”

The event was attended by Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, local officials, engineers from the Power department and residents of the Majlishpur assembly constituency.
