Agartala, May 19, 2025: In a major milestone for wildlife conservation in Tripura, Sepahijala Zoo has welcomed the birth of three healthy tiger cubs, ending a decade-long wait. The cubs were born on May 11 to a tigress that was introduced to the zoo last year under an animal exchange programme.

“This is the first time three tiger cubs have been born here, and they are all doing well,” said Biswajit Das, Director of Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary. He confirmed that the birth took place naturally without any human intervention and the zoo staff are closely monitoring the mother and cubs via CCTV in a disturbance-free zone.

Sepahijala Zoo had been without tigers from 2015 until 2024. In February last year, a male and a female tiger were brought in as part of an inter-zoo exchange. The pair soon bonded, and their successful mating has now brought joy and hope to the staff and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

“The well-being of the mother is crucial for the cubs’ survival. We’ve enriched her diet with vital supplements to ensure both her health and the nourishment of the newborns,” Das added.

The last tiger birth recorded at the zoo was in 2014, but sadly, the cub was stillborn. The arrival of these three healthy cubs has not only lifted spirits at the zoo but also marks a promising revival of the big cat population in the region.
