Agartala, September 12, 2025: The state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the massive embezzlement of funds from the official bank account of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).

The SIT, headed by Additional SP (West Urban) Dhruba Nath, includes SDPO Sadar Deba Prasad Roy, Inspector Rana Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station, and Investigating Officer SI Ranjit Das. The team has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation, gather concrete evidence, and ensure fair justice in the case.

According to the official order, the SIT members will hold meetings on a priority basis to monitor progress and submit their findings. The scam came to light after fraudulent bearer cheques were allegedly cloned and used to siphon off funds.

Mayor Dipak Majumder earlier confirmed that ₹16.43 crore, earmarked for public welfare, was illegally withdrawn from AMC’s account at the UCO Bank main branch in Agartala. “The money was credited to the account of a Hyderabad-based agency which has no links with AMC,” Majumder stated, calling it a grave breach of trust.

The high-profile case has triggered concerns over financial security in civic bodies, with authorities under pressure to ensure accountability and swift justice.
